DDDA to be shut down and a referendum newsdump

If you ever wonder how cynically our own government – no matter what party – treats us, then you get a clue today. Traditionally we would see bad news being released on a Friday (a Friday night newsdump), so that the bad news would get killed in the weekend news cycle – but this time the tactic is different.

The Comptroller and Auditor General was tasked with writing a special report into the scandal ridden Dublin Docklands Development Authority (DDDA). That report was finished and signed off on February 24, 2012 – or three whole months ago. The report would appear to have been missing down the back of a couch somewhere and by some miraculous coincidence, today of all days, it appears.

So forgive my cynicism when you see that

1) On a day the country goes to the polls in a referendum and;
2) The night before newspapers are set to be wholly dominated by coverage of that referendum

…the report magically appears, and Environment Minister Phil Hogan, whose Department is responsible for the DDDA, (and who has been missing in action during the entirety of the referendum campaign) suddenly appears to comment and confirm that yes, the report is published, and yes the DDDA will be shut down.

The Beef Tribunal Report – 1994

Finally got my hands on a copy of this report, which has never appeared online. TheStory.ie obtained, photocopied, scanned and OCRd this document at some effort. I believe this is one of the more significant reports in the history of the State. This is almost all of the report in three parts.

Finlay Tribunal Report (1997)

This is the report of the Finlay Tribunal, also known as the Report of the Tribunal of Inquiry into The Blood Transfusion Service Board.(Via Lenus).



Interim report on the Glackin Report

This is the Interim Report on the Glackin Report, written by the Select Committee on Enterprise and Economic Strategy in 1993. It was written after the publication of the Glackin Report (also known as the Chestvale Properties Limited and Hoddle Investments Limited Report). We do like reports.



Reformatory and industrial schools system report 1970

This is the Reformatory and industrial schools system report 1970, which was chaired by District Justice Eileen Kennedy. It is also known as the Kennedy Report.



Commission of inquiry on mental illness: 1966 report

It doesn’t seem to have received much publicity, but the HSE has started publishing historical documents, particularly from Grangegorman Mental Hospital in the 1950s. Many PDFs are not OCRd so I’ve started the process. The documents are quite poorly scanned so the OCR won’t be as good as it could be. But it’s a start. All mental hospital records from this era should be digitised.

Moriarty Tribunal report – unlocked

For a reason known only to the gods, the Moriarty Tribunal released two massive and expensive reports, but did so as password protected PDFs.

After paying at least €42m for the reports, I would have hoped they least they could have done was release plain old vanilla PDFs. But they didn’t. You can’t copy and paste from the reports on normal Windows machines.
